Eh...it was kind of stupid.
For some reason I was expecting full on greatness when I finally got to see this film which was so mistreated by Lionsgate and theaters alike.
Perhaps it was because I love Clive Barker's books so much (Imajica and the Books of the Art being my favorites) Perhaps it was because all my horror freak friends told me that it was amazing.
Be that as it may, it had to live up to the short story which I had read many years ago. I wondered how this was going to play on the big screen in a full-feature being that it didn't seem to have too much to flesh out (no pun intended).
The fact is that the translation for me was quite mixed.
The gore factor was high and inventive. The stress factor and tension was taut and inviting to those of us who visit the darkened halls within ourselves.
The acting was really quite good and the characters pretty well developed.
The climax was somewhat lacking though and lastly the ending was...well...kind of impotent.
I can't say what it was that I would have changed in this, but the foray into the supernatural was left veritably untouched and only barely alluded to until the end. I can only imagine the confusion and letdown for the viewer who watched this all the way through and with eyes that never saw the written word.
I give this almost 4 stars for some really great work, but it gets in its own way at the end and really needed to choose a path so to speak or go much further than it did in reaching the end.
A good movie that missed too much to be great.
Or Horror solid, if that phrase is more to your liking. The movie, based on a Clive Barker story (It's a short, I´d prefer Hellraiser),anyway, has some very nice special effects. Not for the faint hearted! Not too many though, just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The same can't really be said about the story. Let's just say that you will know pretty soon where this is heading. If you think this is a bad thing (not being surprised and knowing more than the main character ... much more!), is up to you. Apart from V. Jones, I liked the main character. You might recognize him from Alias. Interestingly enough he's portraying a similar character in this, than his Alias ... well character. In Alias he was a reporter, here he's a photographer. The movie stands and falls with his performance (Jones phones in his performance with ease or does his run of the mill, depending on your point of view). And I think he does a great job.
sick ass horror with a twist.
watch this and creep on the same night and you wont be wanting to head home on the underground for sure hahaha
(Well B., you were right about the hesitant part, that's for sure.
Though my opinion about it doesn't exactly strike me as popular, so you might be in for a treat with this one.)
Midnight Meat Train is just one of those movies...
You know, one of those movies that suck.
I could, however, find some good things in it:
- Clive Barker's story. Most of it (ending included) is original and well thought;
- some (few) eerie atmospheric bits;
- one thing my grandmother taught me is that fair amounts of blood and guts are always enjoyable in any given situation.
Now let's see if I can somehow pack the bad things in a short statement:
- cliche acting, cliche dialogues;
- for some reason, it's very hard for me to look at Vinnie Jones' mug when he's trying to pull off that serious look and not laugh, with that kind of laughter that says, in a Homer tone, "He he he... he's such a bad actor";
- sadly, I still haven't read any of Barker's Books of Blood yet, so I don't know how faithful the movie is to the original story in all its aspects, but either they've changed it beyond tolerance, or that's one story that should've never been adapted to the big screen.
But somehow I doubt the story's characters talk like plain old Hollywood predictable pun throwers;
- everything else I forgot.
Which I undoubtly did.
So if you just feel like watching something where Vinnie Jones is being violent, simply try one of the soccer matches he played and was sent off from due to unprofessional conduct.
EXACTLY!
Pretty much any soccer match he played in will do.
Final note goes to say that this can actually be interesting to watch if you have an almost sexual thing for late night deserted subway stations.
Though if you do, I'd probably advise you to become a subway ticket machine rather than watching this.
Ah, but I'm not militant about it.
To each his own.
An excellent Hollyweod debut from Kitamura, making very good use of Clive Barker's original story. it could have worked better at around 80 minutes, with some visible padding in the theatrical cut. However, it doesn't skimp on the gore, the actors are decent (especially Vinnie Jones, who gives a great performance despite only speaking one word), and it's very effective in places.
midnight meat train is probably not for taking it for nothing .Vinny Jones is starting to suit to this genre and could be very excited movie worth to watch it
I loved the short story of this by Clive Barker.
I soooo wanna see if the movie is just as good.
