Note: Not nearly as much about the story as it is about special effects, "Mirrors" never fully explores a sheer power of its concept, but even still offers a satisfaying ride till its suprising ending. It's somewhat a shame that nothing equally interesting stays behind the mirrors as the actions of mirrors themselves. Maybe if the writers had more ambition, who knows what it could've turned out to be? Certainly not the next "The Innocents", but something one can come back to at least one time again.
Extra half of a star for its brilliant creppy opening scene.
"They're everywhere.
- What are you talking about?
The fucking mirrors!"
I think that Alexandre Aja is one of the most gifted horror movie directors of today. "Haute Tension" was a real thrill ride but "Mirrors" seems to lack something that made the previously mentioned movie special.
Bauer.. sorry Kiefer Sutherland stars as an ex-cop who works as a nightguard in a burned shopping mall. Some terrible force starts to haunt him and his loved ones.
"Mirrors" has its moments. Like the brutal scene in the bath and the ending. Otherwise, it's a normal, predicatable horror flick with supernatural elements.
The sets are beautifully dark and creepy and that is a factor that works for me. Just hope that Aja's next effort will be at a high level, cuz he is capable of doing something spectacular.
And a movie with Kiefer can't be seen without his legendary line...
"Damn it!"
This was pretty creepy and I am just a wuss when it comes to scary movies. But near the end it got kinda silly but then it ended pretty creepily.
I probably need to watch this again in full and in one sitting, or maybe Im just cranky lately that its also affecting my take on the movies Ive been watching??
Anyway.. I wasnt that impressed with it the first time. Im starting to wonder if somethings wrong with me cuz the people around me seem to be so creeped out by it and... I just wasnt. =s
Mirrors is the U.S. remake of Korean horror movie Geoul Sokeuro, it is good and scary but not as much as the original one. The movie is about A mall security guard becomes wrapped up in a mystery involving a particular department store's mirrors which seem to bring out the worst in people. The story is almost the same as the original as well as the plot which are interesting although a little predictable. It has a good rhythm and the tension grows in its intensity as the movie moves along, these are two very good things because it never makes the movie tiresome to the viewer. The cast is good, Kiefer Sutherland gives a very convincing performance, although he reminded me of Jack Bauer in some moments of the film. Amy Smart's role was good but very short and Paula Patton as Kiefer character's wife gives a decent acting job. In conclusion, it was a good movie but it could be better.
Not a bad flick. Great death scene with Amy Smart and an interesting little twist at the end. Seemed a little rushed though.
