The original Hellboy had bags of lo-fi charm, which this bigger budget sequel never quite recaptures. However, it does have outrageously mad production design, oodles of monsters and Ron Perlman with a pair of sawn off horns. When director Guillermo Del Toro lets his imagination run loose, as he does in the Troll Market scene, the results are breathtaking.
Okey dokey, I'll start out simple. This movie is not Gone With the Wind. It isn't Ben Hur, not even Pan's Labyrinth. it is no fantastic achievement in film that will go down in the history books. But really, it's Hellboy - does it really need to be a classic? Honestly, I loved this movie. It was pure fun. I found the first Hellboy movie to be a fun movie. . .but it lacked that certain something that was keeping it from being a great movie. This one introduces all new mythology into the series, which allows director Guillermo Del Toro to invent all sorts of new creatures that all look amazing. The visual aspect of this film is classic, nothing short of amazing. The movie has some flaws, a few strange possible plot holes, but by the end of the day, the humor rules the day, and the humor hit spot on, to make a very funny film. I can't get the song "I can't Smile Without You" now after seeing this film. That segment was hilarious. Hellboy succeeds in being a film with a decent story, good visual work, and great characters with great humor, all to make just an overall FUN movie where Indiana Jones couldn't. (I only mean Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) For someone who believes any film that doesn't win 11 Oscars isn't worth watching, I'll be honest, you'll hate Hellboy 2. For someone who goes in expecting only to be entertained, just to have a fun time, I 100% recommend this film to that kind of person. Go see it, it's very worth it.
Best bit: the beautifully animated fairytale opening. -
MCT:December 18, 2008It's better, funnier, cooler and more exciting than the original. A work of a superb perfectonist. Director, Guillermo del Toro has crafted another visualley stunning, artisticly made and well-crafted film filled with amasing action, great humor, dazzeling creatures and superb speacial effects. It stays true to it's strong story and it's charasmatic characters. It's action-packed and terifficly funny. Absolutely spectacular and adreniline-pumping from start to finish. An incrediable, unforgettable and tremendously entertaining movie. Ron Pearlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones are excelent once again as the trio of superheros that you cant help but love. Perlman gives plenty of strentgh to his role, showing dedication and love for his character crafting another amasing performance. It has great character interactions that shows they have brilliant chemistry. A stunning, riveting and visionary classic. A rollar-coaster of extroadinary power and endless fun.

MCT:December 4, 2008Funtastic! Guillermo del Toro officially gets my seal of approval to do the Hobbit. The detail and amazing creature effects were outstanding. I really liked the elf prince and the troll market. The story itself was okay, I'm hoping its purpose is to lead us somewhere in the next one.

Far better than the original, with more imaginative sequences, especially the elemental scene. No one can combine beauty and horror quite like Del Toro. Sublime.

the same director who made pan laverith or to some laberinto del fauno the italian film and for some reason knowin that made me want to watch it and it a good thin i did because i love it

Characters Look kinda like the ones in Pans Labyrinth... And looks closer to the comic than the first one. Must.. See..

Just saw it today! Loved It cant wait for DVD! Special effects were amazing! I loved Pan's Labiryth sp? And now Toro has done a great job with this one too!
