Taken on its own limited terms there is a lot of guilty pleasure to be found in this relentless hyper kinetic thrill ride. Impressive effects and set pieces hurtle along, effectively papering over some painful acting and dialogue.
Great because of the sum of it's parts. And boy is this movie a Frankenstein! Tons of really cool scenes make for a fun watch
This was promo'ed pretty heavily at SDCC a couple of years ago so I thought I'd give it a whirl. So, what do you get when you mix Escape From NY, Road Warrior, Aliens, and various plague/zombie movies? Apparently this piece of shit. The real problem is that its focus is on torture porn.
No opportunity to wallow in gratitous gore is overlooked. There's no emotional core other than the shock of violence. This isn't even so bad that it's good. It's just bad and I can't believe the cast that came together for this waste of celluloid. After the mutilation of a little girl (who grows to become our protagonist) and running over cattle in an oversizzed military vehicle I turned this off. I've sat through many a movie of questionalble taste, so that's saying something.
When you can't cast Kate Beckinsale, go for her look alike, which seems to be the precise way Neil Marshall was thinking when he cast Rhona Mitra and made her look, walk, and talk like Selene from Underworld.
Also like Underworld, Doomsday is a much better film then it has any right to be. It's completely entertaining, and while it may not have any original ideas, it executes its ideas very well. If you're a fan of Mad Max, Gladiator, Aliens, Escape From New York, or even if you just want to see some senseless violence, this is the action flick for you.
Neil Marshall, who really breathed some fresh air into the horror genre with The Descent, shows that he has real talent in staging action, in showing off the nicely crafted set designs, and in telling a story that as hollow as it is, it still manages to keep you rooting for the characters.
Doomsday is not a film for everyone. At best, it'll achieve cult status. But like post-apocalyptic films like Blade Runner, The Road Warrior, or even films like The Descent, I can see Doomsday with a legion of devoted fans for years to come.
Here we have another post-apocalyptic/quarantined virus movie. I love these types, namely the 28 days later movies. This movie can be very much compared to a mix of 28 days later and resident evil.
So that means it's good right?
Answer: No, not really.Yet another movie you can chalk into the "So Much Potential" list. The director/writer Neil Marshall also directed The Descent, which is another film I had mixed reviews on. One thing is certain with Mr. Marshall: he loves his female heroines, and so do I.
Welcome to Hollywood Rhona Mitra. She is the only redeeming quality in this film. She kicks more ass than Milla Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale... However, she's not as hot. Regardless, she single-handedly made this movie for me.
I have many problems with the plot. Most of the things that happened were inconceivable. For instance, if Glasglow has been quarantined for 30 years, how exactly is there gas for all those vehicles?? Many many things go unexplained, and things that are explained were poorly executed. So the reason they survived inside the wall is nothing spectacular, just survival of the fittest? C'mon, that's lame!!
Was I the only one who found it a little trite that there was a group of nobles filled with knights, castles, horses, archers, and even the clothes were authentically noble looking?? That sort of evolution doesn't occur in 30 years. And then if that wasn't cheesy enough, it moves onto the opposing group inside the wall who is led by the King's outcast son: the savages, who are all barbaric looking and don mo hawks, chiseled bodies, piercings, tattoos, and who just yell and scream constantly while listening to heavy metal music.
The director took it a little over-the-top. But overall, this can be a fun, gory, action-packed ride if your a fan of 28 Days later, Resident Evil, or even Underworld. But please leave your minds at the door, and watch out for the enormous plot holes the size of Texas.
Bit of a mediocre action flick. Had it's moments, mostly towards the end, but they weren't that great. Aaand, the script was rather dull. However, Rhona Mitra successfully pulls off being an action star.
did not like it much...but the chase sequence in the climax was really grt...that more than covered up for the movie...wich was average...
Neil Marshall, in his 3rd film (dog soldiers & the Decent being the others) goes down hill I'm afraid. seems like he wanted to make a film with all his favourite scenes & ideas from others & does not quite pull it off. The main two influences are Escape from New York (for the most part of the film) & the great car chase at the end of mad max 2 (so much as to name 1 character(John) Carpenter & (George) Miller & other references. on their own the action scenes (& gory deaths) & post apocalyptic Scotland & the action scenes & car chases are entertaining, but where it falls down hard is the script, almost as if a 13 year old wrote it,putting all his favourite bits of other films into one film & disregarded how to make sense of the plot & how to get from one scene to another.
Anyone like me who has Enjoyed Mr Marshall's films previously, will enjoy spotting the actors from his previous movies & the subtle name references (such as Sterling for the lad who played Spoon in Dog soldiers etc)
It's a film I really want to like, but due to the bad story used to wedge the good action scenes, It leaves you feeling not quite satisfied.
This movie doesn't try to be more than what it is... A good old 80's style action movie ! You could say it's an hommage to movies like the Mad Max series and Escape from NY. It entertains and is fun !
I don't understand why people have a problem with doomsday. I thought it was good. Yeah, it was lacking in a few things story wise but the rest of it was good. The guy who said that we had already seen car chases and arena death battles is right, we have. But that is kind of the point. The people we see in doomsday have been left there to die. They know absolutely nothing of the outside world and were determined to get out once people came back in. The car chase was inevitable and the arena battle was their form of entertainment. So I really don't understand the problem here.
I caught a matinée, so I only had to pay $5.50 to see it. I wasn't expecting originality, I was expecting a good time...which I...kinda got?
This is basically a rip-off of Mad Max/Road Warrior with a hint of 28 Days Later and maybe Escape from New York. If you had any decency you would rent one of these films instead of paying to see a horrible Hollywood rip-off.

this was interesting when it first came out in the 80's..although then it was called escape from new york...hollywood and their "original" ideas...give me a break
